A to B Guinea Pig Society Frequently Asked Questions about Guinea Pigs (Cavies)

Abscess:  Pussy Infection, can be located anywhere on the animal.  First signs are inflamation - swollen, red warm & sore.  May lead to other infections.  Recommend vet incise & drain wound.

Anophthalmia:  Babies are born without eyes & are pure white.  Caused by Roan x Roan or Dalmation x Dalmation breeding.  Recommend taking to Vet for euthanasia as they often have other problems.  See Microphtalmia.

Anorexia:  Cavy will not eat.  Causes - overgrown teeth, illness.  Feed a liquid diet via syringe, puree vegetables, baby food, vitamin B can stimulate appetite.  Take to a Vet.

Barbering:  Hair Chewing by self or cage mates.  Bordom, feed more hay, remove culperate.  Try a low scented deoderant on the victims coat, use sparingly & repeat every few days.

Bloat:  Build up of gas in cavy's stomach & intestines - life threatening.  Cavies can only pass gas through their anus.  Try one teaspoon of vegetable oil via syringe (mouth), this will help release the gas, often causes diahhoea, pig must be kept on a bland diet of hay & lots of water.  Care must be taken that the cavy does not become dehydrated.
